So many yummy snacks mixed into one – this photo does not being to show how fun & colorful the bunny bait looks this year!
This has many names and we use it year-round changing up the ingredients depending on the season.
This is a popular idea that has changed a lot since we had kids. There are many ways to make and sometimes, we just grab partially opened packages of nuts, dried fruit, cereal, chow mein noodles, crackers, candy or pretzels and mix it up.
One constant ingredient is vanilla candy melts.*
Sometimes we use popcorn. It makes for a larger volume and probably a little better for us but this time, we did not include popcorn.
Prep time: about 15 minutes
Yields: It depends on the amount of treats you incorporate.
Ingredients
- 4 pieces vanilla candy melts (we used Good and Gather from Target 1/2 package)*
- 1 cup Butter Braid pretzels (we love Better Made)
- 3 oz Cheddar Goldfish (about ½ the package)
- 1 cup animal crackers
- 1 cup frosted animal crackers
- 5 oz Archer Farms Spring Monster Trail Mix (about ½ the package)
- 6 oz Archer Farms Shimmer Almonds (about ½ the package)
- 1 cup marshmallows
- Sprinkles (oops, we forgot)
*Some recipes we only use ½ the amount of candy melts because we like it more like a mix rather than pieces of snacks. Easier for the littles to eat and they seem to think they are getting more because there are more pieces. AND Target’s Good and Gather vanilla melts include a microwave-safe non-plastic disposable dish yielding easy cleanup.
Instructions
- Cover your countertop or table with parchment paper, before you begin
- Place all ingredients (except marshmallows – they melt a little when already added and make a MESS – or omit all together) in a large mixing bowl.
- In a microwave-safe medium bowl, heat the white candy melts per package instructions until smooth.
- Pour candy melts over the mixture, then use a spatula (the flat spatula that comes with the InstaPot is perfect) gently to toss and stir until the candy melts have coated the ingredients. Do this quickly, you do not want it to harden into large pieces.
- Transfer coated popcorn mixture to parchment paper.
- Add marshmallows to top and spread mixture out to an even layer.
- While candy melts have not yet hardened, sprinkle with sprinkles (we forgot this step – oops).
- Let bunny bait dry completely 30-45 minutes, then use your hands to break a part if needed (less candy coating as explained above may yield less pieces to break).
- Stored bunny bait at room temperature up to 4-5 days in a sealed container – we doubt it will last that long,
