Meet Dr. Carmen, Erkia and Mackenzie – “My New Normal” | Greater Lansing Area Moms

This week’s Meet a Mom has a bit of a spin! We are featuring a local grandmother, mother and granddaughter.

Seven year old Mackenzie Smith was featured on both WILX & WLNS locally this past week. With the help of her grandmother, Dr. Carmen Thomas, Mackenzie has written a book, “My New Normal.” A book about how life completely changed during the unprecedented times of the Pandemic.

“The book is about how coronavirus started and how I’m staying safe,” Mackenzie explained.

Writing is in Mackenzie’s blood so it is no surprise that she had this idea. Her grandma, Dr. Carmen has written a few books herself and her mom, Erkia, has a new blog, A Real Life with Kia.  Mackenzie and her grandma started writing the book in August and by the end of November, Erkia had self-published it on Amazon. It sold 250 copies within the first month.

“I must wash my hands at school for 20 seconds. And I must keep my mask on.” Just a few of the new normals Mackenzie has to do while at school. She talks about everything from Zoom classes to graduating from Kindergarten during the Pandemic.

Mackenzie, who has been virtual schooling since Thanksgiving, will return to school in person next Monday and she couldn’t be more excited! “It takes courage to be you, just be you.” says Dr. Carmen. And we bet Mackenzie will have no problem continuing to be exactly who she is, a happy seven year old trying to navigate her new normal.

“My New Normal” is available now on Amazon. They are also hoping to have it in local bookstores soon.
