Sledding at the Sleepy Bear Dunes | Greater Lansing Area Moms

Photograph taken by Alexis Rankin, @lex.lens on Instagram

Have you ever walked up then ran or tumbled down any of the Sleepy Bear Sand Dunes near Glen Arbor?  We have!  And it is fun and sunny and hot and Lake Michigan provides a refreshing reward.

Now think of this same enormous sand dune, covered with snow and transformed into a gigantic sledding hill!  Imagine the fun!  Climbing up would be worth sledding down.

People snowshoe and walk miles of trails along Lake Michigan’s lake shore.  Visitors slide down the dunes when it is not snow covered, they ski down without skis – seems fitting the blanket of snow serves as a means to “fly” down this well known sand dune by sled.

Here is a map of the Sleepy Bear Dunes area from the National Parks Service.  Some areas are not open for winter use.

Take a look at the article we ran across an article on mLive.  Then we found this incredible photograph by @lexs.lens Thanks Alexis!

A long road trip to near the little finger of Michigan may be in our future (opposite the thumb is the Leelanau Peninsula and Sleepy Bear Dunes is in both Benzie and Leelanau counties).

Thanks for sharing your amazing photograph, Alexis Rankin. Blue skies, sunshine and a gigantic area to sled – a nearing end of winter perfect combination! For more incredible imagery,  visit lexs.lens at Instagram
