The snow is here. Time to sled. And ski. And snow-shoe. | Greater Lansing Area Moms

HOORAY for the SNOW.

The first snowfall of the season is here and we are all so very happy. There are so many places to get outside and have fun in the snow.

One excellent state-wide resource is the PURE Michigan campaign (think of Tim Allen’s voice guiding us through some of the mitten-state’s beautiful landmarks). PURE Michigan also offers a lot of seasonal events and locations to visit. In particular downhill skiing. We do not have it in close proximity but Michigan does boast many options to move those skis around some fresh powder.

Locally there are options for cross country skiing and snow-shoeing from Burchfield Park in Holt and Lake Lansing North in Haslett to Fitzgerald Park and Lincoln Brick Park in Grand Ledge.  And not to forget the peaceful and serene Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing.

Sledding options are almost endless with city and county parks such as North Meridian Road Park in Okemos, Ehinger Park in East Lansing, Granger Meadows/Valley Farms Park in DeWitt Township and Hayes Park in Mason. Holt has John Taylor Memorial Park and there are some options in Lansing such as Poxson Park, Delta Mills and Grand Woods Park.  Some school districts have dedicated spaces.  There are also options around the house to use a hill or create an incline in your yard to achieve some nearby sledding – not the roof, please.

Granger Meadows/Valley Farms Park also has warming stations and dog walks so may just make a longer day of it.  Pack snacks, lunch and an extra pair of mittens or gloves.

Do not forget tubing at Hawk Island. It just opened for the season and it is a ton of fun.  And thank you for the magic carpet that pulls these tired legs and their little legs back to the top. Burchfield Park also offers tubing in addition to sledding, cross country skiing and snow-shoeing.

Wherever you get out, just get out. The winter may at times seem lengthy in the East Lansing area yet fresh, clean, beautiful snow does not stick around nearly long enough.

As always, remember to check websites for COVID restrictions, changes or cancellations.

Stay well, have fun.
